Description
-
These are additional records of the estate of Mottrom Ball (following the initial inventory, appraisal, and sale, uploaded as a separate item). They include a document recording the division of enslaved people among his heirs. The accompanying images are of handwritten transcriptions of the records contained in Will Books held at the Fairfax Circuit Court Historic Records Center.
The first set of accounts, recorded on pp. 321-324 of Will Book U1, records transactions between Jan. 1843 and Oct. 1844, and was presented to the court on Oct. 21, 1844. The second set of accounts, recorded on pp. 121-129 of Will Book Y1, records transactions between October 1844 and Oct. 1851, and was presented to the court in Jan. 1852. It was apparently recorded in the book well after that, in April 1856 (the clerk's way of writing numbers is sometimes hard to read, but that seems to be the date). The division of slaves is recorded on pp. 251-253 of Will Book W1, and is dated Dec. 28, 1850. The PDF scan was performed by and obtained from the Fairfax Circuit Court Historic Records Center.
